3-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour via Merzouga

Your journey begins with morning pickup from your hotel, riad or preferred meeting point in Marrakech. After leaving the city, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains along the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. This scenic route reaches more than 2,200 metres above sea level and offers wide views over mountain valleys, traditional villages and dramatic landscapes. There will be time for photographs and short stops before continuing to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its earthen architecture and fortified village. Walk through the historic ksar and learn about its importance as a former trading settlement and filming location. After lunch in the area, continue toward Ouarzazate, a city associated with kasbahs, desert landscapes and international film productions. The afternoon journey passes through Kalaat M’Gouna and the Valley of Roses before reaching the Dades Valley. Dinner and overnight accommodation are provided in a comfortable hotel or riad in the Dades area.

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through rocky landscapes, palm groves and traditional villages. The first major stop is Todra Gorge, where high limestone cliffs rise on both sides of the river. You will have time to walk through the canyon, enjoy the peaceful surroundings and take photographs. Continue toward Tinjdad or Touroug, where lunch can be arranged depending on the pace of the day. The route then leads toward Erfoud, a desert town known for fossils, dates and its connection to historic trade routes. In the afternoon, arrive in Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Your luggage will be transferred separately while you join a camel caravan for the journey across the sand. As the sun sets, the dunes change from gold to deep orange. After reaching the desert camp, settle into your private tent and enjoy a traditional dinner. The evening usually includes Amazigh music around the fire, followed by time to admire the stars and the quiet atmosphere of the Sahara.

Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast at the camp, return to Merzouga by camel or four-wheel-drive vehicle, where your driver will be waiting. The road toward Fes begins through the desert towns of the region before reaching the Ziz Valley. Stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the extensive palm groves and oasis settlements below. Continue through Errachidia and across the Middle Atlas region, with a possible lunch stop near Midelt depending on the schedule. In the afternoon, travel through cedar forests near Azrou. Barbary macaques may sometimes be seen in this area, although wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. The final stop is Ifrane, a peaceful mountain town known for its clean streets, alpine-style architecture and cooler climate. Continue to Fes, where your driver will drop you off at your hotel, riad or preferred location.
